This research project report examines prospects for multilateral marine scientific research in the South China Sea. It reviews national marine scientific research regulations among South China Sea littoral states as a confidence-building measure, analyses cooperative practices in the region and in other disputed regional seas, and identifies lessons for developing joint marine scientific research mechanisms. The report recommends areas, methods, zones and parties for cooperation, with attention to organisational structure, funding, implementation and the management of sensitive maritime issues.
